Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for US Users Amid Trade Dispute

Google Maps has begun displaying 'Lake America' for users in the United States, following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump. The change is part of a trade dispute with Canada, which recently imposed tariffs on $20 billion worth of US goods after talks broke down.

The US had already slapped 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, prompting Prime Minister Mark Carney to announce retaliatory measures. In response, the White House Communications Director Steven Cheung celebrated the Google Maps update, saying 'It's official! LAKE AMERICA on Google Maps.'

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul was not as enthusiastic, stating 'New York won't be calling it that.' The name change only applies to US users, while those outside the country will see both names with 'Lake America' in parentheses.
