Google Maps Shows 'Lake America' in US After Federal Name Change

Google Maps has started displaying 'Lake America' for Lake Ontario in the United States following a recent federal government decision. The U.S. Geographic Names Information System, the official geographic names database, changed the name from 'Lake Ontario' to 'Lake America' on August 29.

The change means that users in the US will see 'Lake America', while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario'. Users outside of North America will see both names.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 27 directing the government to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America'.
