Google Maps Takes Sides in US-Canada Trade Dispute
Google Maps has taken sides in the trade dispute between the US and Canada by changing the name of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for users in the United States. This move comes after President Donald Trump reportedly reached out to Apple to rename the lake as part of an escalating trade dispute with Canada.
The change was made without prompting from Trump, and Google stated that it is following its long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country. According to Google, users in the US will see 'Lake America', while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario', and others outside of these two countries will see both names.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has responded to the name change by unveiling a sign declaring 'Lake Ontario: Now and Always.' Ford stated, 'President Trump can call it whatever he wants, but I can tell you, the rest of the world will always call it Lake Ontario.'
