Google Maps has temporarily changed the name of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' on its US maps, following a request from President Donald Trump.

The change was made in accordance with the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which is the official federal database for geographic names in the United States.

However, users in Canada will still see the lake labeled as 'Lake Ontario', the name that has been used since the 17th century.

The move comes amidst a trade war between the US and Canada, with both countries imposing tariffs on each other's goods.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticized Trump's decision, calling it 'absolutely backwards' and stating that 'no one's going to call it Lake of America.'
