Google Maps Then and Now: A Challenging Experiment in Nostalgia
In an experiment to relive the past, the author tried using Google Maps like it was 2006. The first challenge was finding a way to access Google Maps on their phone, as there was no iPhone app available at that time. Instead, they used a desktop computer and printed out the turn-by-turn directions.
The author started driving with the printed directions clipped to the dashboard, but quickly realized how difficult it was to navigate without live location tracking or voice instructions. They had to rely on their memory and occasional glances at the paper to stay on course.
A major problem arose when the author failed to notice that a part of the route they were taking would be closed due to traffic restrictions. Without live traffic information, they didn't realize this until it was too late, but fortunately were only a short distance from their destination.
The experience left the author appreciative of the many features that Google Maps offers today, including turn-by-turn directions, location tracking, and automatic rerouting. They noted that these features have greatly improved navigation and reduced stress while driving.
