Google Maps Updates with 'Lake America' Amid US-Canada Trade Tensions
Google Maps has been updated to reflect a recent change in nomenclature for Lake Ontario. The global technology giant says it has renamed the lake as 'Lake America' for users in the United States, following an order from President Donald Trump.
The move comes amidst an escalating trade war with Canada that has led both countries to impose billions of dollars in added tariffs on each other's goods.
This is not the first time Google has made such a change. In 2025, Trump issued an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America', and Google similarly updated its maps application.
