Google has launched its 2026 Carbon Removal and Superpollutant Elimination R&D Awards, offering over $6 million in research funding for innovative ideas centered around carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and superpollutant abatement. The tech giant is prioritizing breakthroughs that enhance the scale of mitigation strategies and their ability to be implemented in the real world.

The call for proposals spans various disciplines, including theoretical, laboratory, or field-based academic research, engineering, modeling, and data analysis. Priority research areas include Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE), next-gen CO2 capture systems for Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) facilities, and land use optimization in nature-based CDR projects.

The funds will be distributed by December 31, 2026, with applications closing on September 25. This move is part of Google's efforts to support climate action and reach a global net-zero scenario.
