Google Ordered to Rework Digital Advertising System Amid Monopoly Accusations
A Virginia judge has ruled that Google must rework its digital advertising system due to accusations of an illegal monopoly.
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) had sought an order for Google to divest parts of its technology, but Judge Leonie Brinkema declined this proposal on September 2, 2026.
The DOJ argued that allowing Google to maintain ownership of its ad technology would enable the tech giant to 'manipulate computer algorithms' in ways too difficult to detect.
However, Google countered that breaking apart its tools for small businesses would be excessively harsh and that its system is essential for online publishers to fund digital services catering to millions.
Google's vice president for regulatory affairs praised Brinkema's ruling, saying it rejected the DOJ's proposal to break apart tools that help small businesses reach new customers.
