Google Photos Abandons Google Drive Backup Method

Google Photos is making significant changes to its desktop backup experience starting August 10, 2026. The new procedure involves uploading media directly through Google Photos via a web interface instead of using Google Drive as the middleman.

This change affects users who rely on the automated workflow of backing up photos and videos saved on their computer to the cloud. Previously, users could back up content by adding folders to Google Drive, which would then sync with Google Photos.

The old process will no longer be supported for new content added after August 10, but existing files backed up via this method will remain safely stored in Google Photos accounts.

To adapt to the new procedure, users should visit photos.google.com and select 'Back up folders' from the web interface. Alternatively, they can install the Photos web app for a more automated backup experience.
