Google Pixel Tag Stumbles Out the Gate

Google's long-awaited Pixel Tag is set to debut on August 12 at its Made by Google event in New York, alongside the Pixel 11 series and Pixel Watch 5. The tracker takes a pill-shaped form with a visible speaker cutout for audible pinging, and the launch color is 'Light Fog', a white or off-white shade.

While it's unclear what features will be available on the device, leaked images suggest that there won't be a lanyard hole or clip to attach the Pixel Tag to items like keys. This raises questions about its practicality as a tracking device.

The Pixel Tag is priced similarly to competitors like Apple AirTag and Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2, but it may lack one key feature: Ultra Wideband (UWB) support. UWB enables precision finding, which allows users to locate their lost items with greater accuracy. Google has not confirmed whether the Pixel Tag will have this feature.

However, Google is banking on its Find Hub crowdsourced locator network to provide faster location pings for lost items. With over 68% of global mobile market share compared to iOS's 31%, Google believes that its network can outperform Apple's in terms of tracking speed and accuracy.
