Google Pixel Watch 5 Gets Offline Gemini Support with Major Software Update
The Google Pixel Watch 5 has received its first major software update since its August debut. The September changes bring improvements to gesture controls and GPS tracking, as well as new capabilities like proactive suggestions. One of the most significant features added is offline support for Gemini, allowing users to perform certain tasks without an internet connection.
Before the update, users needed a connection to use Gemini's AI-powered automation features. However, with the September update, the device's internal hardware can handle simpler requests independently. This means users can set timers or add items to their calendar offline, although more complex prompts and proactive suggestions still require an internet connection.
To access on-device Gemini, users need to download the September 2026 update, which started shipping out on September 1. The build will roll out to users in phases, with automatic updates available overnight or when connected to a charger. Users can also check their current firmware version by going to Settings > System > System Updates.
The update includes several other new features, such as proactive suggestions and Gemini personalization. Proactive suggestions allow AI to suggest task automation across apps on the device, while Gemini personalization enables AI to answer personalized questions using contextual data from connected apps.
