Google Play Apps Lure Users with Easy Money Promises, But Never Pay Out

A growing number of mobile apps on Google Play promise users easy money and rewards for playing games or completing small tasks, but in reality, they have no intention of paying out.

According to a recent investigation by Bitdefender, these deceptive apps use various tactics to keep users engaged and watching advertisements without ever receiving the promised rewards. One common practice involves applications that promise cash rewards, where users can earn virtual rewards relatively easily at first, but progress slows or stops altogether as the balance approaches the minimum amount required for payout.

The investigation found that these apps often use fake names and logos of well-known franchises, such as Grand Theft Auto V, to lure users in. In one case, a fake GTA V app surpassed one million downloads despite having no public reviews. The images used to promote it showed signs of being created with artificial intelligence.

The researchers also observed the repeated reuse of the same software, where applications presented as PDF readers or QR code scanners may be virtually identical despite being published under different names and by apparently unrelated developer accounts.
