Google Pledges to Clean Energy in Historic Geothermal Deal with Fervo
Google has made a significant move in its quest for reliable and clean energy. The tech giant has entered into a historic power purchase agreement (PPA) with Fervo Energy, securing 396 megawatts (MW) of geothermal energy. This deal is the largest enhanced geothermal PPA to date and demonstrates Google's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
The partnership between Google and Fervo dates back to 2021 when they collaborated on Project Red, a commercial proof-of-concept pilot that successfully demonstrated the efficacy of Fervo's Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) technology. The new agreement gives Google the option to add an additional 600 MW of capacity by 2030, bringing the total potential capacity to roughly 1 gigawatt.
Fervo's EGS technology uses horizontal drilling to generate geothermal energy wherever hot rock can be found. This innovative approach allows for the creation of new power-generating sites, reducing the reliance on traditional geothermal sources that are often limited in availability.
