Google Powers Up World's Largest Geothermal Deal to Fuel Utah Data Center
Google has signed the largest geothermal power deal ever, partnering with Fervo Energy to develop an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) in Utah. The agreement involves a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement between Google and Fervo, which will provide clean energy for a planned data center in Utah.
Fervo's Cape Station EGS geocluster is the largest of its kind, with a goal to begin operations by 2028. The deal is significant because it shows Big Tech's growing interest in using enhanced geothermal systems to power their data centers.
Geothermal energy is a reliable and constant source of power, making it well-suited for data centers that require around-the-clock operation. However, traditional geothermal systems have been limited by 'Goldilocks geology,' which requires specific conditions to be met. Enhanced geothermal systems overcome this limitation by engineering reservoirs underground.
According to Roland Horne, director of the Geothermal Program at Stanford University, Google likely paid above market price for the deal as a way to stimulate the EGS industry. While the cost remains a significant hurdle for geothermal energy, tech giants like Google have emerged as key drivers in its commercial expansion.
