Google Prepares Gemini App for Avatars, Plugins, and Gemini 4

Google is further developing its Gemini desktop app to include avatars and customization options. The company is also working on a settings section where users can create and manage their own avatars directly from the app. This move aligns with what competitors like Claude and Codex are doing with their desktop apps.

The addition of connectors, which allows users to integrate external tools with Gemini models, remains missing from the consumer app. However, Google has a business version that offers some limited connector options. The Spark product was the first to include custom MCP support, but this capability is still not available in the main consumer experience.

Internal preparations for Gemini 4 are underway, with the next major model expected to arrive around December. This timeline resembles the release cycle of Gemini 3, which began appearing during the summer before its official launch later that year. The desktop app is being adapted to handle new types of responses, including Gmail and Calendar widgets.

These changes are currently in development and not yet available outside Google. Once released, the combination of avatars, apps, skills, plugins, connectors, and richer response widgets could turn Gemini desktop into a more comprehensive AI workspace.
