Google Prepares New AI Model to Compete in Coding Race

Google is gearing up to launch its new AI model, Gemini 3.8 Flash, which will enhance the company's coding capabilities in a bid to catch up with its competitors.

The internal codename 'Skimaki' has reportedly received positive feedback from Google engineers during internal testing through the Jetski coding tool.

In head-to-head evaluations, engineers preferred Gemini 3.8 Flash over Anthropic's Opus, but the new model is less powerful than Google's largest models with trillions of parameters.

Google has been investing heavily in improving its AI models' coding abilities this year and has stepped up its use of reinforcement learning.
