Google Pushes Limits with Accurate GPS Route Tracking on Pixel Watch 5
The development of accurate GPS route tracking for the Pixel Watch 5 was a major undertaking by Google's Precision Location team. The goal was to provide users with reliable and precise location data, especially during outdoor workouts.
According to Frank van Diggelen, a distinguished engineer on the team, 'If your position is jumpy, it undermines the whole experience.' To address this issue, the team drew upon existing solutions developed for other Alphabet products and modified them for the Pixel Watch 5.
The team utilized three-dimensional models of buildings worldwide, obtained from Google Maps, to minimize errors caused by GPS signals bouncing off structures. They also leveraged Google's network of GPS reference stations across the globe to account for discrepancies in atmospheric conditions and satellite errors.
Another significant challenge was fitting this solution into a smartwatch. Smartwatches have small antennas, which limits their ability to receive strong signals from satellites. To overcome this, the team compressed raw GPS data on the watch and sent it to a server for processing and correction before delivering it to the Google Health app back-end.
The team conducted extensive testing, sending testers out wearing various smartwatches in different environments. Their findings showed that the Pixel Watch 5 consistently provided accurate GPS route tracking, even in urban settings.
