Google Recruits Top AI Researcher from OpenAI Amid Industry Shakeups
Google has hired back Barret Zoph, a top AI researcher, from OpenAI's orbit. Zoph was a research scientist at Google Brain for six years and later became vice president of research at OpenAI before co-founding Thinking Machines Lab.
He temporarily returned to OpenAI earlier this year but is now returning to Google DeepMind as vice president of research. This appointment is part of a bigger shakeup inside Google's AI business, which has seen CEO Demis Hassabis step down and teams shifted from DeepMind to the wider Google company.
The significance for investors lies in the continuous struggle for elite AI researchers, especially as Google competes with OpenAI, Anthropic, and other well-funded startups. Experienced research leadership is becoming increasingly desirable as the next generation of AI models comes together.
