Google Renames Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' Amid US-Canada Trade War
Google has updated its maps application to reflect President Donald Trump's recent order renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for users in the United States.
The decision comes amid an escalating trade war with Canada, which has led both countries to impose billions of dollars in added tariffs on each other's goods. The update is based on Google's practice of using names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
Those using Maps in the US will see 'Lake America', while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario'. Users outside of the US and Canada will see both names.
The move echoes a similar decision made by Google in 2025 when Trump issued an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. The White House did not immediately comment on the update, but it was met with mockery and indifference in both countries.
