Google has made a significant update to its maps application by renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for users in the United States. This change reflects a recent order by President Donald Trump, who sought to rebrand the lake amid an escalating trade war with Canada.

The decision comes just days after Trump's order and echoes a similar move made by Google in 2025 when it renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America following another Trump directive. The company cited its policy of using names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) to justify the change.

According to Google, users in the US will now see 'Lake America' while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario.' Meanwhile, individuals outside of North America will be able to view both names on their maps. The White House and other relevant officials have yet to comment on this development.
