Google has updated its Maps to reflect a recent executive order by Donald Trump, renaming Lake Ontario 'Lake America'. The decision comes after a trade standoff between the US and Canada, with Trump accusing Canada of being difficult to deal with on trade. Google claims that it updates its Maps based on official government sources, including the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which has formally changed the name to 'Lake America'. However, not all government officials are in agreement - New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated that she would not be referring to the lake as 'Lake America'.

The move is seen as a jab against Canada, with Trump's administration repeatedly making public jabs at the country. The trade war between the two nations has escalated in recent weeks, with Washington imposing 50% tariffs on Canadian goods worth billions of dollars. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has promised to match the tariffs 'dollar for dollar' and imposed similar tariffs on US imports.

The decision to rename Lake Ontario has drawn criticism from around the world, with many questioning whether the US has the authority to change the naming convention of an international lake. Google's move has also been seen as a concession to Trump's whims, following the company's decision to relabel the Gulf of Mexico 'the Gulf of America' last year.

Trump joked about renaming other bodies of water during his Oval Office press conference, suggesting that he might consider renaming the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Far-right MAGA trolls have even suggested renaming these oceans as the 'East American Ocean' and 'West American Ocean', respectively.
