Google Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' After Trump's Order
Google has made significant changes to its mapping application, renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for US users. This decision comes after a recent order by President Donald Trump, which sparked an escalating trade war with Canada.
The update echoes Google's previous move in 2025 when it renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America following a similar order from Trump.
Google stated that its policy is to use names assigned by the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which explains why US users will see 'Lake America' while those in Canada and other countries outside the US will continue to see 'Lake Ontario.'
The decision has been met with mockery and indifference from both Canada and the US. In response, Ontario Premier Doug Ford erected a billboard-sized message on the Canadian shore reading, 'Lake Ontario. Now and forever.'
