Google Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' Amid Trade War

Google Maps has changed the name of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for users in the US, following an executive order signed by President Trump. The order was issued amid a trade war with Canada, which has imposed tariffs on various goods including copper wire, wood, and dairy products.

The GNIS (Geographic Names Information System) formal renaming of the lake is cited as the reason for Google's update to its mapping service. According to the company, users in the US will now see 'Lake America,' while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario.' International users will display both names.

Similar changes were made last year when Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America.'
