Google Researcher Turns AI Consciousness Debate on Its Head
Google researcher Blaise Agüera y Arcas has sparked debate in the AI community by arguing that the question of whether AI can possess consciousness is being asked backwards. Instead of asking if AI should be treated with consideration because it's conscious, we should consider why we treat other beings with care and see where that leads.
Agüera y Arcas, who leads Google's 'Paradigms of Intelligence' research team, suggests that humans don't care for others because they're conscious; rather, when we care for others, we come to believe in their consciousness. This inversion carries a potential danger: it could legitimize the idea that beings without consciousness need not be treated with care.
Meanwhile, Florida Atlantic University professor Susan Schneider warns against conflating AI intelligence with consciousness. She points out that AI is approaching human parity in language and reasoning but notes there's no compelling evidence that consciousness exists. Schneider argues that an excessive focus on chatbots risks overlooking areas that demand more urgent investigation, such as biological AI and neuromorphic AI.
