Google Rolls Out Motion Assist to Reduce Motion Sickness on Android

Google has introduced a new feature for Android devices called Motion Assist, designed to reduce motion sickness when using a phone inside a moving vehicle. This technology is similar to Apple's Motion Cues, which was first introduced in 2024.

Motion Assist works by tapping into the device's accelerometer and gyroscope to create dots around the periphery of the display that move in harmony with the motion of the car. When the car turns right, for example, the dots sweep across the screen to the left; when the car brakes, they slide forward.

According to Thomas Ricker, a deputy editor and Verge co-founder, this technology is effective in reducing motion sickness. He personally uses it while working on his MacBook and iPhone from the passenger seat of his van.

The feature can be configured to turn on automatically when it detects a moving vehicle or can be quickly toggled through a tile in your Quick Settings. Users can also set the opacity of the motion indicators and choose from a variety of shapes and colors.
