Google Scoops Up Spirit Airlines Data in $10M Auction
Google has won an auction for Spirit Airlines' emails and chats in bankruptcy proceedings. The search giant agreed to pay $10 million for the data, which amounts to about 100 million emails and 500 million Microsoft Teams chats.
The information does not contain any personally identifiable details, according to a court filing by investment banker Dylan Friesner. This means that Google will not be able to associate individual people with specific communications.
Google intends to use the data as training material for its large language models. The dataset also includes marketing materials, HR information, project management documents, financial databases, audits, and presentations.
A spokesperson for Google stated that they acquired part of an enterprise dataset from Spirit Airlines to improve their products and AI models.
