Google Secures Nuclear Power Lifeline with €1 Billion Finnish Deal
Google has made a significant move in the field of renewable energy by partnering with Finnish utility company Fortum Oyj. As part of its €13 billion investment plan in artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland, Google agreed to buy up to 50% of the capacity from the Loviisa nuclear power plant. This deal will provide a €1 billion lifeline for the plant, ensuring it remains operational until at least 2050.
The agreement is notable as it marks the first time a tech giant has invested in a nuclear power plant in Europe. Google's decision to partner with Fortum Oyj demonstrates its commitment to securing low-carbon, round-the-clock electricity for its data centers. The Loviisa nuclear power plant will continue to provide a reliable source of energy, reducing Finland's dependence on fossil fuels.
