Google Shakes Up AI Leadership Amid Rivalry with Anthropic and OpenAI

Google's AI leadership has undergone significant changes as Demis Hassabis shifts his role from CEO of Google DeepMind to Chairman. This move comes at a critical time for the company, which is struggling to keep pace with its rivals Anthropic and OpenAI.

Hassabis will take on the newly created title of Alphabet's Chief Scientist, where he will focus on the societal impacts of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). He has stated that AGI is close and needs attention. Meanwhile, Koray Kavukcuoglu will assume day-to-day responsibilities as Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind.

The shakeup follows the departure of several key leaders, including veteran engineer Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le, who left to launch a startup called Discovery Loop. This exodus has raised concerns about the company's ability to innovate and execute in the AI space.

Alphabet's shares fell 4% after the news, sparking investor concerns that Google is falling behind its competitors. Hassabis' new role will allow him to focus on long-term scientific pursuits, which some have criticized as prioritizing research over revenue generation.
