Google Sheets Closes Pivot Table Interoperability Gaps with Latest Update

Google has released an update to its Google Sheets application that ensures grouped pivot table fields persist when importing and exporting files from Microsoft Excel. This is the third fix related to Excel compatibility in the past 60 days.

The update addresses a long-standing issue where grouped fields would be lost when moving workbooks between the two applications, causing analysts to spend hours re-creating the groupings from scratch.

According to Google, this change reflects a structural alignment between Sheets' internal data model and Excel's pivotCacheDefinition architecture. Grouped fields are now stored as persistent source fields in the pivot table editor sidebar, rather than being tied to the active table layout.

This fix is significant for organizations operating in hybrid Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace environments, where complex analytical workbooks have been a sticking point in migration conversations.
