Google Slams Brakes on Memory-Hogging Apps Amid RAM Shortage Crisis
Google is introducing new memory limits for apps on Google Play to address the ongoing global RAM shortage. Starting in February 2027, developers will be required to reduce their app's memory usage by at least 25% and optimize their code to prevent unexpected performance throttling and app terminations.
The move aims to close the gap between high-end devices and low-end ones that often struggle with resource-intensive apps. According to Google, the new thresholds will help developers ensure their apps deliver a premium user experience while preventing system-wide slowdowns caused by excessive memory usage.
One of the key changes is the requirement for apps to reduce their dynamic memory usage, bitmap usage, and code optimization. This means that images held in memory must be cleared when switching away from an app, reducing the risk of crashes and improving overall performance.
The move is a response to the industry-wide crisis caused by the high demand for AI-driven data centers, leading to a shortage of consumer-grade memory used in laptops, smartphones, and tablets. Google's new requirements will be enforced starting February 2027, and apps that fail to comply may see reduced app visibility and publishing capabilities.
