Google Snaps Up Spirit Airlines' Business Data for $10 Million
Google has acquired Spirit Airlines' vast business data and software collection for $10 million in a bankruptcy auction. The dataset includes millions of emails, Teams messages, operational records, and other internal communications from the US low-cost carrier. This acquisition is part of Spirit's bankruptcy proceedings, which began after its shutdown in May 2026.
The data pile contains 100 million emails across 80,000 accounts and 500 million Teams messages. Additionally, it includes 17.1 million OneDrive files, 20.6 million SharePoint files, and 667,563 IT tickets. The operational records cover over 763,000 flights, five million crew pairings, and the purchase of 787,452 parts.
Google will use this data to improve its products and AI models, aiming to develop more accurate and efficient systems. However, it assured that customer data or credit card information are excluded from the acquisition.
The deal is subject to approval by a US bankruptcy judge, with a court hearing scheduled for August 19 in the Southern District of New York. Spirit Airlines retains the right to keep copies of the sold data for winding down its business or complying with legal requirements.
