Google Snatches Up Spirit Airlines' Data for $10 Million
Google has acquired Spirit Airlines' data for $10 million to feed its artificial intelligence models. The sale includes emails, internal communications, spreadsheets, and other information from both employees and customers. This is part of the airline's bankruptcy process, which was halted in May.
The data has been stripped of any personally identifiable information, but it still provides a vast amount of useful insight. Google claims that this data will help improve its products and AI models. Other companies, including Mercor.io, also bid on Spirit Airlines' data but lost out to Google's $10 million offer.
It's worth noting that airline bankruptcies are not unusual, but what is unusual about this case is that most airlines are sold whole, including their data, to another airline. In this instance, the court will rule on the sale of the data at a hearing on Wednesday.
