Google Spam Update Targets Search Policy Violations Amid AI Answer Layer Shift
Google's third spam update of 2026 rolled out globally on August 18, targeting violations of its general search spam policies.
The update, which may take a few days to complete, does not introduce new policy but rather refreshes the classifiers behind SpamBrain and re-applies existing rules.
This comes as Apple renegotiates the price of distribution in Europe under regulatory pressure, and the AI answer layer selects brands before searching at all, according to a study.
The study found that brands injected into ChatGPT's first self-generated search query reached the final answer 68.9% of the time, while those retrieved during the session but never named in any query reached the answer only 2.1% of the time.
