Google Squeezes Links Further Down Search Results Page
Google's search results page has undergone a change in behavior for certain queries. Instead of displaying an AI summary alongside a 'Show more' button, the company now automatically expands the summary to display at the top of the page. This shift is first reported by Search Engine Roundtable and affects users who type specific phrases into Google.
The auto-expanding feature appears to be triggered for queries such as 'what is the best game on switch 2', although it's unclear what other factors contribute to this behavior. According to a statement from Google spokesperson Jennifer Kutz, the company has determined that expanding AI summaries is more useful for users.
Kutz also notes that if a user begins scrolling before the expansion occurs, the change will be cancelled to preserve their reading position. However, this means that users must scroll quickly in order to retain control over their search results page.
