Google Streamlines Password Manager Switching on Android

Google has introduced a new password manager switching experience on Android that simplifies the process of migrating between apps. Users can now seamlessly move all their passwords, including passkeys, from one app to another without the need for CSV files.

The feature works by allowing users to import or copy passwords from the old manager app into the new one. Android detects the presence of multiple password manager apps on the device and coordinates the transfer between them. Users can review the information being transferred and approve it in just a few taps.

This new system supports passkey transfer as well, eliminating the need to set up passkeys again when switching to a new app. Google claims that this approach also reduces the risk of exposing data from CSV files. The feature is currently available on select partners and in Google's own password manager app, with support for 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane, among others.

The password manager switching feature will be available on all devices running Android 8 or above.
