Google Suspends AI Feature in Google Earth Amid Disinformation Fears

Google Earth has temporarily suspended a new AI feature that allowed users to superimpose AI-generated images onto satellite maps. The tool, called 'Nano Banana 2,' sparked criticism from experts who worried it could fuel online disinformation and undermine trust in satellite imagery.

Nathaniel Raymond, head of the Humanitarian Research Lab at Yale University's School of Public Health, expressed concern that the feature would make his job more difficult. 'For those of us who collect and analyze satellite imagery of highly politically fraught events, like Sudan, like Gaza, [the feature would make] our already-difficult job a million times harder,' he said.

Experts noted that AI-generated images created on Google Earth included a watermark indicating they were fake. However, critics argued that this was not enough to prevent the spread of disinformation and that Google's integration of AI into its products could have far-reaching consequences.
