Google Taps into Item Tracking Market with Pixel Tag
Google has entered the item tracking market with its new Pixel Tag, which directly competes with Apple's AirTag. The Pixel Tag is a small, stainless steel device that's IP67 water- and dust-resistant, featuring a built-in speaker to alert users when an item it's attached to is lost.
One notable difference between the Pixel Tag and AirTag is the presence of an on-device button, which allows users to trigger a sound on a connected smartphone. The Pixel Tag also has an oval shape and doesn't come with an attachment point like the AirTag, requiring an add-on accessory for adding to keys or bags.
The Pixel Tag uses a replaceable battery that lasts up to one year and works with Android devices running Android 9 or newer with Bluetooth 6. It can be tracked in the Find Hub app and supports precision finding features when an item is lost nearby but out of sight, thanks to added support for Ultra Wideband.
Google's Pixel Tag also includes cross-platform unknown tracker alerts, a collaboration between Apple and Google that sends alerts to both Android and iOS devices if an unknown tag is detected traveling with the user.
