Google Teams Up with Mitti Labs to Slash Rice Farm Methane Emissions

Google has signed a four-year deal with Indian carbon removal company Mitti Labs to help smallholder farmers in India transition to alternative wetting and drying practices used in rice farming, reducing methane emissions.

The deal is designed to cut the methane equivalent of 3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over 20 years by transitioning around 100,000 hectares of land to more sustainable agricultural practices. This is estimated to halve methane emissions and reduce water usage by 40% without sacrificing yield.

Under the agreement, Mitti Labs will create 1 million carbon credits over four years for Google in exchange for its support. The deal is part of Google's efforts to scale up clean power deals, including a recent announcement of a nuclear PPA in Europe and a solar and storage deal.
