Google Teams with AMD on Next-Gen Tensor Processing Unit
Google and AMD are working together on a new Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) designed for heavy AI workloads. This marks a significant shift for Google, which has previously developed its own TPUs without partnering with other companies.
The new TPU will reportedly feature on-package CPU cores, which could improve performance results such as power efficiency and general-purpose Tensor compute. AMD's involvement is likely due to the company's expertise in areas where Google struggles, such as CPU IP and programming logic.
This partnership may also benefit AMD by providing a new revenue stream from companies investing in hyperscaler AI. However, neither Google nor AMD has confirmed the collaboration, leaving some questions about its scope and goals.
