Google Tests Content Compensation for AI-Generated Responses
Google has launched an experiment to compensate publishers for their content's contribution to AI-generated responses. The AI Contribution Pilot is currently being tested with a select group of publishers through Google Search Console.
The programme links compensation to the value Google assigns to a publisher's content when it contributes to an AI-generated response, unlike traditional licensing arrangements that involve fixed or upfront payments.
Publishers participating in the pilot receive an additional AI earnings widget in Search Console, which displays monthly earnings and some historical data. However, the dashboard currently offers limited detail on how individual payouts are calculated.
Google has described the programme as an early-stage learning pilot, exploring ways to reward high-quality content alongside traffic and tools provided to publishers. Payments are based on value rather than raw usage, meaning a publisher may not receive a payment every time their content appears in or is connected to an AI response.
The pilot comes amid concerns that AI-generated answers could reduce referral traffic to publishers' websites, prompting them to reassess their relationship with search platforms.
