Google Tests Homepage Without Search Button, Showcases AI Capabilities
Google is testing a new homepage design that removes the traditional search button for signed-out users in the US. According to Search Engine Watch, the test features three shortcuts called Create images, Ask about files, and Brainstorm, which all lead to AI Mode, a conversational interface.
The aim of this test is to help people discover what they can do with search without needing an account. The shortcuts are designed to showcase Google's AI capabilities, particularly in the areas of image creation, file inquiry, and brainstorming.
Targeting signed-out visitors is no accident, as they are more likely to seek answers on chatbots like ChatGPT or Perplexity. By placing its AI showcase in front of them, Google aims to retain users who might otherwise opt for alternative services.
