Google Tests Pay-Per-Use Program for Publishers Contributing to AI Responses
Google has begun testing a pay-per-use program called the AI Contribution Pilot that rewards publishers when their content makes a significant contribution to AI-generated responses. The pilot is currently being offered to a select group of publishers through Google Search Console and allows them to track accrued earnings and payments in real-time.
The program distinguishes between content that contributes to generating an answer and content used after the answer has been generated, and only rewards material contributions to AI responses across the Gemini app, AI Overviews, and AI Mode in Google Search. Unlike traditional licensing arrangements, Google's model does not involve upfront fees, but instead ties payments to qualifying usage.
Google has approached dozens of publishers for the pilot, with smaller organizations showing greater interest than larger ones. While initial payments may be relatively small compared to existing advertising revenues, the program represents a new route to monetizing content used in AI systems without individual licensing agreements.
