Google Tests Pay-Per-Value AI Licensing Program for Publishers
Google has launched a pay-per-value AI licensing program for publishers, which rewards them for content that significantly contributes to AI-generated responses. The program is currently in its early stages and is being tested with dozens of publishers, mostly small and mid-sized ones.
The pilot uses Google's Search Console-based system, where participating publishers receive an extra earnings widget displaying their monthly payout figure. However, the payment calculation remains a 'black box,' making it difficult for publishers to determine how much they are earning.
Some critics argue that the program doesn't offer enough revenue to make opting in worthwhile and could potentially hurt publishers' leverage to negotiate better terms with Google. Others see it as an opportunity for smaller publishers to gain access to the market.
Google confirmed that the program is a learning pilot to test how best to reward high-quality content, on top of traffic and tools already provided. The company stated that it's testing a new model for working with websites whose content helps keep its generative AI answers fresh and accurate.
