Google Tests Publisher Pay for AI-Driven Content Contributions
Google has launched an AI licensing program that compensates publishers for their content used in various Google AI offerings, including AI Overviews and Gemini. The pilot program operates on a pay-per-value model, which rewards select publishers when their content significantly contributes to an AI answer.
Publishers can opt out of the program, but those who participate will receive earnings through an AI earnings widget in their Search Console dashboard. This widget provides a monthly earnings figure, but it does not offer additional details on how payments are determined.
The new program aims to address the changing value dynamics between publishers and Google. Historically, publishers allowed Google to index their content, which would then drive referral traffic back to them. However, with the increasing use of AI tools, Google is now pulling more value from publisher content without necessarily driving traffic to their sites.
By paying publishers directly when their content adds value to AI tools, Google acknowledges the economic value of publishers' work. This could provide smaller publishers with a benchmark for the worth of their content in AI answers, potentially benefiting them during licensing negotiations.
