Google to Pay $68M in Settlement Over Secretly Recorded Conversations

A multi-million dollar class action settlement has been reached in a lawsuit against Google over its Google Assistant recording personal conversations without prompting. The tech giant agreed to pay $68 million to settle the suit, which alleged that this issue had occurred across multiple devices over a decade. While Google denies any wrongdoing, users who purchased qualifying Google devices or lived in homes with Google Assistant-equipped devices may be eligible for payments.

The claim deadline is approaching quickly, and those who qualify must submit their claims by August 27, 2026. To determine if you're eligible, check your email, including the spam folder, for an email with the subject line 'Google Assistant Privacy Litigation Settlement.' This email will contain a unique ID and PIN that you'll need to file a claim.

The settlement applies to those who purchased Google devices such as Google Home, Home Mini, Home Max, Nest Hub, or Pixel smartphones between May 18, 2016, and March 19, 2026. If you're eligible, you can receive up to four points for each qualifying device, with a maximum of three devices (12 points). Those who fall into the second group, the 'Privacy Settlement Class,' will receive one point.

Payouts are expected to be sent out after the court gives final approval to the settlement and any subsequent appeals have been resolved. A court hearing is scheduled for October 1, 2026, but no date has been set for payment distribution.
