Google Unveils Offline AI Translator for Raspberry Pi

Google has developed an offline AI translator that runs on a Raspberry Pi 5 without any internet connection. The device, called Gemma Translator, uses Google's open-weight family to process speech locally, eliminating the need for cloud connectivity.

The project is part of Google's Antigravity team and was built using the smallest model in the Gemma 4 E2B series, which was specifically designed for edge computing on small hardware like the Raspberry Pi. The device includes a microphone and speaker inside a custom 3D-printed enclosure, making it a self-contained translation tool.

According to Google, this technology has the potential to benefit travellers in areas with poor connectivity, organizations handling sensitive conversations, and emergency responders operating without infrastructure. Although this is not a product announcement, it demonstrates how AI assistants can be useful even when disconnected from data centers.
