Google has unveiled the Gemma Translator, a handheld device that provides offline real-time translation using a Raspberry Pi 5. This innovative tool is designed to operate independently of cloud infrastructure, making it ideal for use in areas with poor connectivity or situations where privacy is paramount.
The Gemma Translator's hardware includes an 8 GB Raspberry Pi 5, a 480x320 touchscreen, microphone, speaker, push-to-talk buttons, and a rotary encoder. The device's software stack utilizes the Gemma 4 E2B model via LiteRT-LM for efficient translation speeds while using minimal RAM.
The Gemma Translator features two modes of operation: one where one person manages both sides, and another where two individuals handle their own microphones and language settings. This design allows for direct interactions and ease of use in conversational scenarios.
