Google Unveils Pixel Tag, Its First Smart Tracker With UWB And Channel Sounding

Google has introduced its first smart tracker, the Pixel Tag, as part of its Made By Google event. The device boasts advanced tracking features like Ultra Wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth Channel Sounding, which is a rare combination among popular Android-compatible smart trackers.

The Pixel Tag's design matches the rest of the Pixel ecosystem, with an oblong shape and white color option, dubbed 'Fog' by Google. The device is made from plastic and metal, weighs less than half an ounce, and has IP67 rating for water- and dust-resistance.

Its battery life is estimated to last over a year, thanks to the replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery. However, its main sensor is an accelerometer, while its real connectivity prowess lies in its support for UWB and Bluetooth Channel Sounding.

The Pixel Tag's features are similar to those of Apple's AirTags, which also use Time-of-Flight radio bursts to estimate distance. However, the Pixel Tag has a unique feature - it supports both UWB and Bluetooth Channel Sounding, making it more precise than other trackers on the market.

Google is positioning itself as a leader in its own tracker ecosystem, rather than relying on third-party partners like Motorola's Moto Tag 2. The Pixel Tag will cost $29 for one unit or $99 for a four-pack, and will be available starting November 11th.
