Google Upgrades Search to Help Students Study with AI
Google has revamped its Search feature to serve as an AI-powered homework helper for students. The changes aim to make studying more accessible and engaging, especially during back-to-school season. With the new features, users can ask Google's query box for help with their assignments, and the search engine will provide visual explanations and practice quizzes.
The upgrade also includes a partnership with education companies like The Princeton Review, Careers360, PhysicsWallah, and Akira Enem to provide study resources and test preparation materials. Students can upload images of their assignments or study guides for detailed help using Google's Lens and AI Overview features.
However, the introduction of these new features has raised concerns about child safety. Last month, Common Sense Media declared that Google's AI-powered Search posed an 'unacceptable risk' to minor users. In response, Google blocked access to Gemini for users under 18 but later opened it up through its Classroom app.
Google claims that the report testing AI Overviews and AI Mode was flawed, stating that the queries used were ambiguous and contrived. The company emphasizes that its AI Search features are a valuable tool for kids and teens to learn and explore information.
