Google Wallet Gets Smarter with New Feature for Parents and Teenagers

Google has rolled out a new feature for Google Wallet that allows parents in the US to set up a digital spending money pot for their children and teenagers. This feature, which doesn't have a formal product name, is designed to give families a supervised way to hand kids money that works anywhere Google Pay is accepted.

The core idea behind this feature is to help parents teach healthy financial habits by monitoring what their children are buying while putting up virtual guard rails to prevent overspending. Parents can load a balance that their kids can then draw from directly, and kids can spend from that parent-supervised balance using their Android phone or a Wear OS wearable.

The setup effectively extends the existing Google Pay footprint to younger users under parental oversight. Parents can see their child's account activity through a running list of transactions, or through push notifications delivered by Family Link if they enable them.

This feature places Google in a category Apple has already occupied with its own Apple Cash Family feature. For households already invested in Android hardware, the timing lands well, particularly for parents concerned about their kids spending too freely during summer break.
